Day in Edinburgh

With the Fringe Festival, the Diamond Jubilee of the Military Tattoo and general summer tourist trade, Edinburgh was absolutely chock-a-block with people today and there were queues for everything. We spent the morning and the early part of the afternoon wandering around the Castle and have to say the Castle cafe was the first place we have ever been asked whether we would like whisky with our morning tea!! (Perhaps thats the Scottish way of rounding off the early part of the day). We waited until the cannon was set off at 1 pm but it was hard to see what was happening due to the number of people standing around.

The castle looked beautiful again in the evening (as we were leaving) and was lit up with changing colours from blue to green to gold to red.

After the castle we walked to the resting place of Grey Friars Bobby before walking the rest of the Royal Mile to Holyrood House.

Not sure if Liz and Phil were in residence but, if so, they kept a fairly low profile. We also went to the Queens Gallery where an exhibition of Dutch painters was on display.

We then walked back up most of the Royal Mile (in the rain!) and later joined in a 2 hour ghost tour that went down into the underground vaults below South Bridge. According to the guide the vaults area is reportedly the most haunted place in Britain.....

With a day of crowds and activity, it was nice to come back to the quiet of our B&B

(Street performers in action).
